Comment: When using this product, understand that the instruction sheet is misleading! Use one cup of rice measured with the plastic cup included with the rice cooker but ***measure the water with a standard 8-oz cup***!!!! The instructions say one cup rice to one cup water. I knew this had to be wrong but followed the instructions anyway on the first use and got scorched, undercooked rice and a smelly house. Standard water to rice ratio is 2 to 1 for any stove top and micro wave and so it is here, tho I have read that you can use 1.5 to 1 if you like drier rice. I measured the volume of the little plastic cup and it is about 4 oz.
Otherwise it's a super little cooker even if it does cost more than a 4-cup. It is truely portable with it's light weight, retractable cord and carrying handle. A good size for taking with you any place you can find an electrical outlet that will supply a steady 30 minutes of power... hotel room, dorm, traveling in an RV or boat. A baggie of rice and a bottle of clean water and you're in business.
Some tips: Don't forget you must wash the rice some place besides the cooker pot or you will ruin the teflon coating. Also, be aware that like almost all of these import rice cookers you must plug and unplug. In their native habitats they are used on a switched outlet which few of us in the US have.

Summary: one bad apple.... 2006-01-04
Comment: I received this as a belated Christmas present from my sister as my Oster rice cooker had just died. I was thrilled when I opened the box as it is a very pretty cooker that was compact and the perfect size for me (3 cups). It is a basic enclosed rice cooker with a cook/warm one switch operation. I cooked a batch of rice that needed some tweaking with the amount of water. I did the tweaking and the second batch came out wonderful--except that the cooker died when it switched to the warm position!! The lights went off and never came back on!! Boy was I disappointed!!!
However, I called Sunpentown's customer service and explained it to them. They looked up the receipt and immediately told me that I will be sent a replacement and a shipping label to send back the defective unit. They were very courteous and professional. If they follow through on this, I will absolutely buy more of their products!! I will post if they do not..... I am sure this was probably just a bad unit and look forward to getting a new one!
UPDATE: I am thrilled to report that Sunpentown did exactly as they promised in less than a week's time. The new replacement cooker seems to be working well this time. I am very impressed with their customer service!
This is a cute little three cup enclosed cooker that has a cook/warm switch. To turn it off you unplug it; very basic but very effective. The cord is retractable. It is a small unit that is easily stored, but is so pretty you may want to leave it out! It has a very understated but colorful floral pattern on it. The unit seems to cook white and brown speciality rices very well; I have no complaints. There is minimal clean up; a condensation cup is located on the back and no removable parts on the underneath side of the lid. The pan is nonstick and seems well made.
I am pleased with the unit and with Sunpentown. I will buy more of their products in the future.
