You push the button, it somehow cooks until the grain absorbs the water and then switches to a warmer mode. I use this to cook everything from barley to black-eyed peas to split pea soup. I set it, press the button and go about my business --- for the more hardy legumes, I do need to occasionally walk by, give a stir and add water, but it's still much faster and easier than cooking them on the stove. I was very annoyed when I tried fancier rice cookers with all their modes and programs. They were just too "smart" and either burned my delicate grains or switched off before my legumes were done. I didn't like the way they cook brown rice as well either: It took longer and wasn't as good. Some rice cookers have a hinged lid that is very hard to clean.
